Did you know? The history of the smiley central
smiley centrals were invented by Scott Fahlman on the CMU bulletin board system. Scott came up with the idea for smiley centrals (a.k.a. smileys ) because he noticed a problem on the bulletin board system when some people would post a humorous or sarcastic comment, but the people reading it would not get the joke because it was impossible to express thoughts and feelings like you do in face to face communications. Scott invented the smiley central by suggesting the use of :-) to show pleasure and :-( to show displeasure. The idea caught on like wildfire and the humble smiley central , or smiley was invented. Others started designing their own smiley centrals almost immediately and today smiley centrals are used extensively, not only in MSN Messenger, but lots of other places such as chat boards, email and other instant messenger applications.
